Before museums… What were paintings for?

  • Before museums... What were paintings for?

This show evolved out of two observations. First, no artwork was ever painted just to be shown in a museum, and second, the original context of paintings is often unknown. This is why the Museum of Fine Arts is presenting, within its permanent collections, a few exemplary artworks that can be understood within their original contexts, including why they were created and how they were originally displayed.
