  • The Alley of Tombs in the Koenigshoffen district

Archaeological excavation work carried out in the Koenigshoffen district for the construction of the tramway revealed part of an alley of tombs related to the first Roman occupation of the city during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD.

Since 2020, a landscaped interpretative area at the gateway to the quarter (near the Parc des Romains tram stop) has showcased these exceptional discoveries, providing key information about the establishment of the Romans in Strasbourg. It features fixtures showing the outline of the monuments on the ground, a bronze model (1:25 scale) and interpretive materials. The names of the legionaries whose funerary stelae were found are engraved on plaques on the ground, placed at the locations where the stelae were discovered. The interpretive area is embellished with trees and perennial plants, illustrating varieties that were used in cooking, perfumery, dyeing and medicine in the Roman age.
